תלה ליה רב לרבי ביני חטי האחין ששיעבדו מהו הוה יתיב ר' חייא קמיה אמר ליה מכרו או משכנו אמר ליה מאי נפקא מינה בין מכרו בין שמשכנו מוציאין לפרנסה ואין מוציאין למזונות

Rab inserted [the following question] between the lines [of a communication he sent] to Rabbi: What [is the law] where the brothers have encumbered [the estate they inherited from their father]? [When the enquiry reached him] R. Hiyya [who] was sitting before him asked, “[Does he mean:] They sold it or pledged it? He said back: “What difference does it make? Whether they sold it [or pledged it, [the estate] may be seized to pay for the dowry but may not be seized to pay for maintenance.
